Insurance is one of those things you hope to never have to use, but gives you peace of mind
knowing it is there if you need it. Especially for travel outside the US, trip insurance is highly
recommended for all. In many countries your health insurance is not valid, and usually
payment has to be made before they provide services or release you from a hospital. If you
are sick or injured, who will assist you in a foreign country? Travel insurance 24-hour
emergency assistance will be there for you.
Airfare is nonrefundable. Depending on the carrier or tour operator you may be able to
change dates for a change fee, plus any differences in airfare. Some even allow name
changes for a fee. But none will refund you. If you can't afford to lose your pre-paid airfare,
or pay the fees and increases to rebook it, you need insurance. Hotels in other countries are
often booked with full pre-payment and restrictive refund policies, including no refund within
the last 30-days for most properties. If you can't afford to just toss away your pre-payment if
an emergency cancels your trip, you need insurance.
No one books a trip planning to cancel it, but sometimes life events force that. Without
insurance you are not covered for blizzards, hurricanes, illness or death of yourself or a
close family member - you take the risk yourself. Kathryn's Travel charges minimum
administrative fees for changes or cancellations, plus any applicable supplier or tour
operator fees. Check cancellation policies by clicking the link at the bottom of this page. If
you have insurance and cancel for a covered reason, these fees are covered. Protect your
investment in your trip with travel insurance that includes pre-travel cancellation coverage.
During travel, insurance can help protect you for problems that may occur, such as lost,
stolen or damaged baggage or documents. It also protects you for medical needs, including
emergency evacuation.
Here are some examples of times Kathryn's Travel clients, and even Kathryn herself have
used insurance:
***A bridesmaid for a wedding out of the country, young and healthy, and certainly attending
- emergency appendectomy one week before the wedding, and not allowed to travel.
Insurance refunded every dollar that wasn't refunded by suppliers.
***An ear infection delayed a return flight by three days. The change fees were $125 per
person in the traveling party of two. Trip insurance refunded the $250, plus doctors bills,
and prescriptions.
***A purse was stolen including driver's license, debit card and digital camera. Emergency
assistance helped get the debit card cancelled, and refunded the cost of the replacement
license and camera.
***An accident at a seaside cliff - emergency air evacuation of $45,000. Insurance paid it.
While we all hope for the perfect vacation, things can sometimes go wrong. Please protect
yourself with travel insurance. Kathryn recommends Protect/Assist as good coverage for
most needs. It is one of the best for all-around coverage pre-travel, and during travel. If you
are not certain about which policy is best for you, ask for advice.
